Which mid-engine Porsche to start with?
Here, Nathan Merz provides some great information regarding the advantages of and differences among the 986, 987 and 981 generations of Porsche (modern) mid-engine cars. Normally, one should buy the best example of a Porsche one can afford. However, in comparing these the choice is more difficult than that. Focusing on the Boxster, if one wants a more raw, old-fashioned roadster experience I think the 986 or 987 are better choices. Want a more refined, daily-driver use-case, then the 981 may be a better choice. Perhaps the sweet spot would be a later 987.1 base model?... negligible IMS bearing risk, no bore-scoring risk, affordable. Nice 987.1 models can be had in the low $20k range.
